2010 Spring Conference

Session Title: “Curiouser and Curiouser”, cried Alice! Scientific Enquiry in the National Curriculum of England & Wales

Guest Speaker:
Stephen Lakeland*, LaSalle Academy

Suggested Audience – All
The 1995 National Curriculum Science attainment target 1 (Sc1) addressed Experimental and Investigative Science. Skills of Planning experimental procedures, Obtaining evidence, Analyzing evidence and Evaluating evidence (POAE) were assessed formally at age 14 and 16, across the country. Come along and see how it was done in the (Wonder)land of Alice, sample some of the investigations used and try out the leveling – sorry, grading – rubric. But if you’re looking for a universal panacea, then you’d probably have to ask Humpty Dumpty!

Stephen Lakeland taught middle school and high school science for 29 years in England before emigrating to the United States in 2006. A former Head of Department, consultant for Eskola Education and visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton, he teaches Physics and Forensic Science at LaSalle Academy and leads science workshops (and children’s’ science parties!) at POW!Science! in Providence.
